Puzzling Over Plastics

Body Parts
PUZZLING OVER PLASTICS
5 x 5 mixed media on stretched canvas

Recently I binged the British series Botched Up Bodies on Netflix.

WOW! Just Wow!

Every person considering cosmetic procedures should watch an episode or two just to understand potential risks. Sometimes things go terribly wrong and one must consider those possibilities.

After a few episodes and several buckets of popcorn I started thinking about why we do what we do to our bodies. Then I began to ponder the effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis on my own wonderful body.

This little painting and a few companion pieces were the products of my wandering mind (note the shoulder replacement scar.)

I think they’re kind of fun, a little Dali-esque, and if nothing else, conversation starters.

for the record:
I’m not opposed to cosmetic procedures. In fact, I had my upper eyelids done several years before my insurance would fully cover the surgery as a medical necessity. I got tired of holding up the outer edge of my eyelids when I was reading at the end of the day, and I didn’t want to wait any longer. Glamorous, right?!
After I did it I was thrilled!
I did not look younger, but I no longer looked tired and angry. I felt like my face better reflected my self.
It was a total win for me.

Send Your Art Into The World With Giveaways

I’m preparing for the onslaught of summer and fall art exhibits, shows and walks by looking through my printed materials and ordering new giveaways. People love a deal, and nothing is better than freebie!

STICKERS

I order stickers from MOO and from a local Orange County printer (I’ll tell you more about that in a later post.)  I use them to seal  the tissue or parchment paper I wrap paintings in while preparing them for packing or shipping.

I like the idea that each piece of art I send into the world is handmade and hand-wrapped. My clients are special and I appreciate their patronage, so I want the packages I send to reflect those facts.

I also give them away to kids at shows, fairs and exhibits. It’s so easy to make people happy!

BUSINESS CARDS

My business cards always have an image unique to me.

Sometimes I emblazon them with my messy work table and sometimes with images of my art.

I avoid super-thick paper because most people dislike the bulk in their pockets, handbags or card cases. I look for the most eco-friendly option (usually recycled paper or cotton) and order a lot to take advantage of quantity discounts.

I’ve purchased business cards from MOO,  Vista Prints, and Greener Printer depending on promotions available when I need to restock. Paper goods are pricey so I always search for a deal!

I include several contact methods and pop them into the packaging with every painting I sell.

And I always have a stack of them on my display and exhibit tables as well as in the venues where my work is being shown. It’s amazing how often those little piles have to be replenished.

POSTCARDS

Postcards are super-popular with the art show-going population!

I like to offer several ready-to-frame sizes in lots of images so clients and visitors can select what they like as a takeaway.

In some cases one of those cards will be the only piece of art that person will own. I’ve had more than one visitor tell me my art is the nicest thing on their refrigerator.  And once in a while the postcards lead to a commission or future sale.

Each of those scenarios makes me happy.

Valentines’s Day 2019

Happy Valentine’s Day!

If you follow me, you know that yesterday was my anniversary. Around here, we celebrate LOVE for days. It’s a fantastic tradition; and I’m lucky to share it with my great love.

I think this image perfectly represents real-life love…

  • The heart has to be sturdy and take some knocks; it has to give and not break.
  • You have to be ready to open the door to growth and opportunity, to change and evolution.
  • You sometimes have to piece your heart back together, but those repairs make it stronger.
  • And you have to remember that love is an endless circle. It never stops. It never dies. It simply changes. It goes round and round.

My great love story continues. It has changed and evolved myriad times, through unbelievable challenges and incredible blessings. I cherish it all.

I hope you have or find your own great love, and that you value its evolution.

Please share your thoughts on love!

Choose Joy

Choose Joy

Happy Sunday!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I hope you have plans that will add joy and happiness to your life. Marie Kondo mania has given #joy a lot of attention lately; and I think that is wonderful! We should all choose joy more often.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don’t usually think of joy as something we can or need to choose; but it most certainly is. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In every moment we can focus on the good or the bad. Both are always present. This is how the world works.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
OUR work is to choose the joy!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Look for the good and be grateful.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Spend more time with people who elevate you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Participate in activities that lift your spirit, your sense of self.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eat, drink and move so you’re nourishing and strengthening that amazing vehicle, your body.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Be responsible for your own happiness.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Choose Joy!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Kindness

Kindness begins with you

“Kindness begins with you.”
I’ve heard that my whole life, but for the longest time I misunderstood it.
I thought it meant I had to be kind to others in order for others to be kind to me.
While that is true, even more true is the fact that if you cannot be kind to yourself, you will never be fully kind to another.
Think on that.
Create something wonderful today. And be kinder to yourself.
That’s what I’m gonna do!

be kinder to yourself, change the world, kim's wisdom, kindness, kindness begins with you, kindness matters, pema chodron
